A suspect is in custody after five people were stabbed Monday night at separate locations across Oakland in less than 30 minutes, leaving one person dead and four others injured, police said.
Police called all of the attacks random, saying there was no apparent connection between the suspect and the victims.
The first stabbing was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m., while the fifth and final stabbing was reported just before 8:00 p.m., according to police.
The first victim, who did not survive, was found inside Cesar Chavez Park near 38th Avenue. The victim’s identity was not immediately released pending notification of family.
Four other people were stabbed at locations across the city, including near the Fruitvale BART station. Two of the surviving victims were in critical condition and two were in stable condition, police said.
Alert residents helped direct officers to 39th Avenue between International Boulevard and East 18th Street, where police took the suspect into custody.
Police said the suspect appears to be unhoused and is known to police, but investigators did not immediately release any additional details. They were still working to determine a motive.
Police are asking anyone with information, photos or video related to the case to contact the department.
