With Patrick Mahomes Back, Here's the Chiefs' Most Likely QB Cut

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes looks like he's mostly back on track for a strong 2026 season after last year's ACL tear.
That means one of the Chiefs' other quarterbacks is likely out during training camp. The Chiefs signed Justin Fields this offseason and drafted Garrett Nussmeier, so those two seem safe to make the 53-man roster.
Kansas City could put Nussmeier on the practice squad, too, if needed. That leaves quarterback Chris Oladokun, the former South Dakota State star, who started two games last year after Mahomes' injury.
Oladokun completed 63.6% of his passes for 235 yards and a touchdown in his appearances last year. Those aren't terrible numbers, but he's likely the odd man out as the fourth quarterback on the depth chart.
Teams normally don't carry more than three quarterbacks, and Oladokun would really need to show a lot in training camp and the preseason to change that. Fields has ample starting experience from his stints with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets.
The former No. 11 pick has 9,039 yards passing and 2,892 yards rushing in his career, and the Chiefs had him in mind if Mahomes couldn't go right away this year. Nussmeier, a seventh-round pick, had a stellar career at LSU, though his last season was left wanting.
Nussmeier completed 64% of his passes for 7,690 yards and 52 touchdowns versus 24 interceptions in his collegiate career. If Nussmeier can look more like he did in 2024 versus 2025, Oladokun has little chance to stick with the Chiefs beyond training camp and the preseason.
Nussmeier falling to the seventh round truly wasn't expected a year ago because he was once considered a first-round pick. The Chiefs aren't going to let that kind of a draft steal get away, as much as the organization appreciated Oladokun stepping in late last season.
