That sounds serious, and it is. But context matters. Newcastle have already banked huge fees this summer and there is no sign of a club scrambling for cash. Crook spelt it out: “But having already made £70million for Gordon, £100million for Tonali and now £75million for Guimaraes, there’s no real financial pressure on Newcastle.”
That changes the dynamic completely. If a selling club do not need the money, the buying club lose leverage. Newcastle can simply refuse to engage, or set a price so high it becomes pointless. Crook’s read on the situation feels accurate: “And you wonder if the hierarchy there might see this Lewis Hall situation as a chance to make a statement – ‘The shop window is closed, we’re not selling any more of our star players’.”
Antonee Robinson offers proven Premier League option
If Hall proves unattainable, Antonee Robinson is the obvious fallback. He may not carry the same age profile or resale value, but he offers something United badly need, reliability. He has been a consistent Premier League performer for Fulham, and his World Cup displays for the USA have only added to his standing.
Crook put it plainly: “Keep an eye on Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the USA international.” He also noted the financial logic, saying, “Their experienced Premier League campaigner would probably come a lot cheaper than Lewis Hall. He’s someone I’m told is on Manchester United’s radar as well.”
That makes sense. Robinson is 28, quick, durable and well established in the division. He knows the demands of the league, gets up and down the flank, and would not arrive needing a year of adaptation. For a club trying to plug immediate holes, that matters.
Michael Carrick needs solutions on left side
Michael Carrick’s issue is not complicated. He needs numbers and balance on the left. Shaw remains the only natural senior option, and that has been a recurring risk for years. Crook highlighted the lack of depth, saying, “Certainly I think it’s going to be a difficult deal for Manchester United to do.” He then added, “What the Red Devils have by way of alternatives – Harry Amass has had a pretty decent pre-season, but the vibe coming out of Old Trafford is still that he will be allowed to leave on loan, leaving Luke Shaw really as the only first choice left back.”
There is also Patrick Dorgu, but the view from inside the club appears qualified rather than convincing. As Crook said, “They’ve got [Patrick] Dorgu as well, but he seems better suited higher up the pitch.”
So this comes down to execution. If United want Hall, they may need to overpay. If they move for Robinson, they get a safer and probably cheaper solution. Either way, they cannot afford to drift. This is a position that needs sorting, quickly and properly.
Our View
As a disappointed Manchester United fan, this report feels depressingly familiar. The need is obvious, the shortlist is obvious, and yet it still reads like a club waiting for the market to decide its next move. We have seen this too many times. One target becomes complicated, the price goes up, the selling club digs in, and suddenly United are looking at alternatives in mid-August like this was somehow unexpected.
Hall would be a very good signing, no argument there. But if Newcastle do not want to sell, then stop hanging around. Pay what is required early or move on fast. That is what serious clubs do. The line about “The shop window is closed, we’re not selling any more of our star players” should be enough warning for everyone at Old Trafford.
Robinson, honestly, sounds like the more sensible move if the numbers for Hall get silly. He is experienced, athletic and available. No drama, no fantasy, no endless negotiation circus. That might not excite supporters who want the shiny option, but after the last few years, competence would be a refreshing change.
The bigger frustration is squad planning. How are we back here again with Luke Shaw as the only proper senior left-back? It is negligent. Champions League football raises the stakes and punishes thin squads. If Carrick is serious about competing, this cannot drag on. United do not need another transfer saga, they need a left-back who can actually play, regularly, and arrive before the season starts getting away from them.
