CARLETON – Carson Welker is coming into his own for the St. Mary Catholic Central soccer team.
The sophomore racked up three goals and two assists to lead the Falcons to a 7-3 victory over Airport on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
“He’s a really nice player,” SMCC coach Jon Pederson said.
Aaron Fowkes also recorded a hat trick and added an assist.

Carson Peters chipped in a goal and an assist.
“We needed that,” Pederson said of his 1-1-1 team. “We really passed the ball well in the midfield and were able to get around defense on wings.”
Adam Ortega scored twice for Airport.
PREP SOCCER
Ida wears crown
GIBRALTAR – Ida beat Gibraltar Carlson 2-1 and Milan 1-0 to win the Carlson Tournament Saturday.
“I am happy for our boys to win their first two games,” Ida coach Tim Allen said. “We did quite well in some areas and need to keep improving in others. Our defensive centers Ryan Buck and Isaak Burks had two great games only allowing one goal and very few shots on goal.”
Burks scored the opening goal against Carlson, then Stevie Riley snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring off a rebound of a shot by Dane Holycorss.
Holycross scored off an assist from Riley for the only goal in the Milan game.
Schaffer wears hat
NEWPORT – Sawyer Schaffer netted a hat trick and assisted on a goal by Cooper Jones as Jefferson-Erie Mason opened its season with a 4-0 win over Frankel Jewish Academy on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Jackson Vallie made seven saves for his first shutout. Jonah Busen and Ethan Sieb also notched assists.
Close games for Monroe
BOYNE – Monroe won a one-goal game and lost two others during the Boyne Tournament Saturday.
Monroe beat Marshall 1-0 and fell 1-0 to Grand Rapids South Christian and 3-2 to Grandville Calvin Christian. The Trojans also fell 3-1 to Romeo.
Aiden Gray scored twice and Edwin Sanchez and Luis Diaz notched a goal and two assists. Edwin Sanchez had the other goal and Jake Steckmeyer picked up an assist.
CROSS COUNTRY
Tulik, Baker capture titles
MILAN – Airport’s Ella Baker and Mason Tulik of Jefferson were the winners in the Milan Puddle Jumper Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Baker ran 20:57.59 to take the girls title with Claire Miller of Jefferson taking second. Randee Mulherin of Jefferson was sixth, Lana Benward of Ida eighth and Haley Lancaster of Milan ninth.
Tulik finished 17:22.45 to clip Milan’s Mason Martin by just over four seconds.
Andrew Bell of Airport placed third with the Jefferson do of Gabe Busen and Carter Lee going 4-5.
Airport won both team titles.
Chiotti takes second
OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford’s Brennan Chiotti took second with his teammate Grant Rasor a second behind in third place of the freshman-sophomore race of the Whiteford Nick Haynes Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 25
A fourth-place finish by Porter Ravary of Erie Mason was the top Monroe County Region performance for junior-senior boys.
Braelynn Chiotti and Breslin Wing of Whiteford ran 4-5 in the junior-senior girls division.
Alex Tremonti of Dundee as fifth for freshman-sophomore boys.
Whiteford’s Molly Fojtik and Madeline Kolbe of Erie Mason were fourth and fifth respectively, for freshman sophomore girls.
DelValle leads Carlson
LIVONIA – Wyatt DelValle took 39th place in the boys race and Madison Slade was 75th among the girls to highlight Gibraltar Carlson’s night at the Lamplighter Invitational on Friday, Aug. 21.
Dundee sophomore Alex Tremonti was 41st overall with a personal-best time of 18:56.0. He was one of six Vikings to establish a new personal record in the varsity race.
Addy Ringbloom ran 56th for Dundee’s girls.
PREP TENNIS
Singles power Bedford
WILLIS – Landon Sparks, Jackson Root and Jacob Black won the first three singles flights in straight sets to power Bedford’s 8-0 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Collins-Maue victorious
Gabe Armstrong-Grant Armstrong and Jack Ryan-Jackson Zapp did not drop a game in doubles.
Airport’s other point came by default.
PREP SWIMMING
Milan, Carlson tie
MILAN – MILAN – Evelyn Gill won the 200 and 500 freestyle as Milan beat Erie Mason-Ida 104-72 and tied Gibraltar Carlson 87-87 on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Other Milan winners were Avery Hovatter (individual medley), Kaylin Brown (diving), Afton Presley (backstroke) and Tori Kimberly (breaststroke).
Reagan Randzazzo ruled the butterfly and Jordan Sikora was first in the 100 for Carlson.
Erie Mason’s Meridith Hasley was the champion in the 50.
Milan’s 200-yard medley relay of Afton Presley, Tori Kimberly, Avery Hovatter and Evelyn Gill took second place at the Battle Creek Lakeview Spartan Relays on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Hoffman wins three times
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Molly Hoffman of Ida, 15, won three of the five events she entered and was second in another at the Defiance County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 22.
The Ida High School sophomore took the top prize of $500 in the Shootout Class.
GOLF
Waterstradts capture titles
DUNDEE – Chad Waterstradt of Dundee repeated as club champion at Dundee Golf Club and his older brother Bret Waterstradt of Petersburg was the winner of the first flight on Sunday, Aug. 23.
It was the fourth title in a row for Chad Waterstradt and 12th since 2009.
A pair of Dundee residents took second. Steve Carpenter was runner-up for the overall title and Steve Hinkleman did the same in the first flight.
First ace for Sayre
DUNDEE – Adam Sayre of Ottawa Lake recorded his first career hole-in-one at Dundee Golf Club on Aug. 17.
He used a 7-iron on the 170-yard, No. 9 hole.
ADULT SOCCER
Anderson, Sowatsky shine
MONROE – Rob Anderson scored three goals and goalie Steve Sowatsky was outstanding in goal to lead Hot Spurs to a 7-5 win over Atletico in the Monroe Adult Coed Indoor Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday.
