“Unbelievable” – Scotland star tells Man Utd they have signed a ‘complete player’

Manchester United have been told they have pulled off a real bargain by recruiting Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

The Belgian international has been playing his football in England since joining Leicester City in 2019.

After four years with the Foxes, the midfielder signed for Aston Villa in 2023, helping the club reach new heights in the Premier League era.

This summer, Man Utd had to reboot their midfield after parting ways with Casemiro and losing Manuel Ugarte to a long-term injury.

While the club signed a couple of 22-year-old midfielders in Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, they turned to Tielemans to add valuable experience to the department.

The Red Devils took advantage of a release clause inserted in Tielemans’ contract to buy him for just £35 million, which has been considered a coup compared with the transfer fees spent on other Premier League midfielders this summer, chiefly Elliot Anderson (£116m), Sandro Tonali (£100m), and Mateus Fernandes (£85m).

During the latest episode of We Are The Overlap , Gary Neville asked Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn what Man Utd would gain from signing Tielemans.

The Scotland international only had words of praise for his former teammate, insisting he will be a great addition to Michael Carrick’s team.

“Unbelievable professional, work rate, quality. Just an all-around good guy, good teammate, but he’s got quality as well,”  said McGinn

“He can find a pass, he can score a brilliant goal. I’m talking about the complete player here. He’s a top player, and he’s so determined to win.”

Will Tielemans play as a starter at Man United?

Unfortunately for Tielemans, his official Man Utd debut didn’t go according to plan. Both he and fellow new signing Santos struggled for pace against Hull City’s dynamic midfielders, as Carrick’s team went on to suffer a 0-2 humbling defeat on the opening day of the season.

Therefore, it is safe to say that the former Monaco and Leicester star can only improve from here on out.

It should also be noted that several other players who returned from the World Cup have yet to reach their peak condition.

After spending £70 million on Baleba , the Cameroonian is expected to become a starter when he recovers from injury, probably dropping Santos to the bench, leaving Tielemans and Mainoo vying for the other spot in the double pivot.

If both players deliver the goods, Carrick would be happy to split opportunities between them, but it will be interesting to see which one would get the nod on the big occasions.
