Jeremiyah Love made his long-awaited NFL debut on Thursday, albeit in a preseason game, and he looked great. He carried the ball 11 times for 58 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry, including two straight explosive runs of 14 and 16 yards in the second quarter. He also added 14 receiving yards on three catches before sitting out the entire second half.
Unfortunately, he also injured his left ankle in the game, and it now looks like he'll miss more than just game reps. Head coach Mike LaFleur said Saturday that Love will sit out the next week to let his ankle heal. Love was more sore Friday than he was Thursday, LaFleur said, adding that the soreness was "more than we were anticipating."
LaFleur said the Cardinals will reevaluate Love's ankle next week before determining a plan for the rest of the preseason. With Love unable to practice this week, it's looking like he won't play next Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys.

After the Cowboys game, the Cardinals will travel to Lambeau Field for a matchup with the Green Bay Packers — coached by Mike LaFleur's brother, Matt LaFleur — to close out the preseason.
With these games not counting in the standings, and the offense clearly built to run through Love even as a rookie, Arizona will likely proceed with caution. Ideally, he sits out the Dallas game but gets back on the field for at least a few reps against the Packers to build toward the regular season. It's also possible he sits out both, though getting him live reps before games start to matter would be the ideal outcome.
The Cardinals face the Los Angeles Chargers in their Week 1 opener on Sunday, Sept. 13 — a crucial matchup they'll need to be at full strength for if they hope to walk away with a win.
