For a long time, the San Antonio Spurs did not have to worry about the point guard position because of Tony Parker. He held the fort down for almost two decades, as he earned many major milestones during his 17-year tenure in San Antonio.
He won four NBA championships, a Finals MVP, and six All-Star nods. Nowadays, Parker is watching from the sidelines in support of the Spurs , and he is glad that there are players who can fully take the torch from him as the guards who can lead the Spurs with Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.
Tony Parker loves what he sees from Dylan Harper
The Spurs are lucky to have young star players, so they have more time to develop and embed themselves in the system. While Gregg Popovich is no longer the head coach, his influence is still felt throughout the roster due to Mitch Johnson being a protege of his.
With that system, players like Harper and Castle can be stars within their roles. Castle seems to be the best perimeter-centric two-way player on the Spurs, and he is still improving his offensive game. For Harper, he is probably the player with the highest offensive ceiling on the Spurs, including Victor Wembanyama.

Harper is that good of a player, and people have noticed that. During the 2026 Playoffs, many were calling for him to start games in the NBA Finals as a rookie over De'Aaron Fox. While the veteran guard was struggling, he still had credit in the bank as a proven veteran in the NBA.
Moving forward, it will be a hard debate to settle between Harper and Fox. In the long run, it is smarter to choose Harper, but in the meantime, he will be playing a backup role. Spurs fans are okay with that, including Parker, who believes Harper is a special player.
"First of all, the way he adapted as a rookie. Not everybody can adapt like that as a rookie. He had a great season, and you can see a lot of similar stuff (to me), the way he can drive to the basket, the way he's like fearless, and he's going after it. I think we’re very blessed to have a player like that. I think he’s going to be good for a long, long time. Him and Castle. They are like the real deal," Parker said about Harper in his interview with Bea Fabregas .
Moving forward, it seems Harper is destined for greatness with the Spurs. Parker sees the potential, and the rest of the world sees the potential star they have with Harper. It will be interesting to see how he progresses, especially with the three talented guards San Antonio has on the roster.
