A gas leak in downtown San Rafael Wednesday morning triggered evacuations, a shelter-in-place order and road closures.
Police said an accidental gas line rupture happened in the area of Fifth Avenue and B Street.
People at Westamerica Bank, located at 1108 Fifth Ave., were instructed to evacuate to the north toward Mission Avenue or A Street. People at 1210 Fifth Ave. were instructed to evacuate toward Mission Avenue or C Street.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for Fifth Avenue between A and C streets as well as B Street between Fourth Street and Mission Avenue. People in buildings were instructed to stay inside, turn off outside ventilation, and close and secure all windows and doors until the order is lifted.
Police officers, firefighters and PG&E crews responded and worked to turn off the gas where the rupture occurred, police said. Authorities said by 12:30 p.m. crews had stopped the rupture and the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
The following road closures were in place:
Fifth Avenue between A Street and C Street
B Street from Fourth Avenue to Mission Avenue
Misson Avenue between Wilkins Street and C Street
