The Indianapolis Colts dropped Saturday's preseason game to the Atlanta Falcons in a game where not a lot went right.
Still, we'll look back at the good, the bad, and the ugly from all that took place.
The good
The game is over: With playing time and roster spots up for grabs during this time of the year, you'd hope to come out of each preseason game with some answers to those questions. However, I'm not sure the Colts had any big-picture takeaways from this outing. Something to hold on to is that very few regular contributors were on the field in this one.
Stand out performers: A few players who did stand out in a positive way were Deion Burks, Colby Wooden, Anderson Castle, and Spencer Shrader.
The bad
Penalties: The Colts were penalized too often in this game, particularly in the first half, where Indianapolis was flagged six times, with a few wiping out some chunk plays. In total, the Colts were penalized eight times for 70 yards.
Backup offensive line play: This is an under-the-radar concern for the Colts this summer, but we saw why it might be an issue. The Colts' quarterbacks faced regular pressure, and the run game struggled to get going. There were a few bad snap exchanges as well. It's tough to move the ball when the offensive line struggles.
The Ugly
Where's the pass rush? The Colts' pass rush depth has been a big question mark all offseason, and through two preseason games, this group has largely struggled to get after the quarterback. In this game, the Colts generated just one sack and one quarterback hit, which came late in the game. Jaylahn Tuimoloau has been very quiet. The lack of a pass rush was a big reason why the Falcons' quarterbacks did whatever they wanted.
Cornerback depth: This group -- outside of Cam Taylor-Britt -- has struggled over the first two preseason games. Mekhi Blackmon was again penalized twice. Rob Carter, who started over Johnathan Edwards, took his lumps, and Edwards gave up yet another downfield pass play. Atlanta's quarterbacks averaged nearly 11 yards per pass attempt -- that's a lot.
