See the full story · 1 sourcesBarring any more major injuries , the Carolina Panthers probably won't have many open spots in their wideout room by the end of the summer. Even still, an unlikely candidate to crack the initial 53-man roster may be making his case for one of those jobs.
Sunday's outing of training camp was won by a bounce-back performance from the Carolina offense. Among the stars on the morning was second-year receiver Ja'seem Reed, who head coach Dave Canales talked about during his post-practice press conference.
"He's consistent," Canales stated. "He knows the concepts, he's a really smart guy—and he's been that way since we got him. A guy we have a lot of trust in. And then, he just keeps making plays."
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Reed was making plays at the University of San Diego in 2024, the year before entering the pros. He reeled in 77 receptions for 1,052 yards and 12 touchdowns—earning the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Year honors in the process.
Reed would then initially be signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2025. After he was waived off injured reserve in June, the Panthers brought Reed in at the end of July—and kept him on their practice squad through his rookie campaign.
As the landscape stands, there may be only one or two Week 1 jerseys up for grabs at wide receiver—with Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker, Xavier Legette, Chris Brazzell II, David Moore as probable locks. In addition to Reed, the Panthers will also have to figure out the placements for the likes of special teams stud Brycen Tremayne, 2025 sixth-round pick Jimmy Horn Jr. and free-agent addition John Metchie III.
While Reed does have his work cut out for him, he's off to an intriguing start—and could be more than just a practice-squad player come September.
