Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said he still believes a trade involving the Buccaneers ' star defensive tackle remains a possibility, despite the team publicly maintaining it does not intend to move the two-time Pro Bowler. Schefter noted that as long as Vea remains firm in his trade request and contract negotiations fail to gain traction, the situation warrants continued monitoring.
The comments come after Vea requested a trade following stalled extension talks. Entering the final year of his contract, the 31-year-old is seeking a new deal after establishing himself as one of the NFL's premier run defenders and the anchor of Todd Bowles' defense. If Tampa Bay were to trade Vea, it would create one of the biggest holes on the roster. His impact goes well beyond the stat sheet. Vea routinely commands double teams, allowing edge rushers like Yaya Diaby and first-round rookie Rueben Bain Jr. more one-on-one opportunities.
His presence also frees up linebackers to flow to the football, making life easier for the entire front seven.

Vea is on the wrong side of 30, wants a lucrative extension, and has already made it clear he is unhappy with his current contract situation. If the two sides remain far apart financially, general manager Jason Licht could eventually decide that acquiring premium draft capital is the better long-term move.
Still, trading one of the league's most dominant interior defenders would be a difficult decision for a team with playoff aspirations. Bowles' defense has been built around Vea's ability to control the line of scrimmage, and replacing that kind of presence is far easier said than done. Finally building around Vea just to trade him is like getting four new tires on a car but removing the motor. For now, the Buccaneers continue preparing for the season with Vea on the roster.
But if Schefter's latest comments prove accurate, this contract standoff may not be over just yet, making Vea's situation one of the biggest storylines to monitor as the regular season approaches.
