Harvey Elliott has been given what he himself calls a “second chance” at Liverpool. That is the phrase that matters here, because the rest is simple enough. His loan move to Aston Villa did not work, the minutes were scarce, the situation became awkward, and now he is back at Anfield with a new head coach, a clean slate and something to prove.
Elliott is 23 now. He is no longer a prospect who can wait around forever for things to break his way. He has already had the academy rise, the early Premier League debut, the move to Liverpool, the flashes of quality and the spells where he looked close to becoming a regular. What he needs now is traction. Regular football, clarity and a role that makes sense.
Last season’s loan to Villa was supposed to provide that. Instead, it turned into a contractual mess. Villa had an obligation to buy Elliott for £35m if he made 10 appearances. They quickly decided they had no intention of activating that clause. The consequence was predictable. Elliott stopped on nine appearances, played only 277 minutes in total, and spent most of the year in limbo.

He has returned earlier than expected and has already appeared in Liverpool’s first two pre-season matches under Andoni Iraola. That matters. New manager, new staff, new judgement. Whatever happened under previous regimes does not automatically carry over. In Elliott’s case, that is probably a good thing.
His own assessment of the Villa move is direct enough. “I wanted to go and explore something, come out of my comfort zone and do something I thought personally that would take me on as a player again. But unfortunately it didn’t work out.” There is no need to overcomplicate it. He wanted a challenge, he got one, and it went badly.

What matters more is how he frames the return. “Now I’m here and it’s kind of a second chance, if you want to call it. Especially with the gaffer and new coaching staff coming in, it’s another chance to impress and hopefully get in their good books,” he said after Liverpool’s 1-0 pre-season win over Wrexham in New York.
That is the correct attitude, and also the only practical one. There is little value in dwelling on a failed loan when the next decision-makers are watching every session and every pre-season appearance. Elliott knows he needs to earn trust again, not assume it.
Andoni Iraola offers reset at Anfield
Iraola’s arrival changes the context around several Liverpool players, and Elliott is one of the more obvious examples. Under Jürgen Klopp he often looked useful and energetic. Under Arne Slot, during the Premier League-winning 2024-25 season, he featured less regularly in league terms, making 18 appearances before being sent out on loan. By the time Liverpool collapsed badly in 2025-26 and Slot was dismissed, Elliott was elsewhere trying to salvage a difficult year.
Now he returns to a squad being reassessed from top to bottom. For a player with technical quality, work rate and positional flexibility, that can be an opportunity if he takes it. He can play wide, he can operate as an attacking midfielder, and he can help link play if the structure around him is right. The question has never really been whether he can play. It has been whether he can become indispensable.
He is also honest enough to admit the Villa spell affected him. He described it as mentally difficult and said it was something he would not wish on another player. Fair enough. Being left in a no-man’s land because of a transfer clause serves nobody, least of all the footballer. Still, he has returned without bitterness and with a more grounded view of what comes next.
He has also reminded everyone that, difficult season or not, he still contributed to a successful campaign elsewhere and arrived back as the England Under-21 star who won Player of the Tournament at Euro 2025. That does not guarantee anything at Liverpool, but it does show his level has not disappeared.
Liverpool future depends on Elliott response
Elliott says he will speak to Iraola later in the season about his longer-term future. Sensible. There is no point forcing that conversation now. First, he needs to be physically sharp, mentally settled and productive on the pitch. Then he can ask where he stands.
That is the reality of his situation. Liverpool do not owe him a place because the Villa move failed. Equally, one bad loan does not erase his talent or his value to the squad. He is back, he is motivated and he appears genuinely happy to be wearing the shirt again.
His closing message says enough about where his head is. “I’m here now and I’m trying to cement my spot in the team or within the squad.” That is the target. No grand statements, no guaranteed path, no drama. Just a player trying to turn a bad year into a useful restart.
For Liverpool and Iraola, that may be exactly what pre-season is for. For Elliott, it feels like something more serious than that. It looks like a career checkpoint.
