A look back at the 1949 season for the Cardinals
The 1949 season wasn't awful. The Cardinals went 6-5-1 and were third in their division, although they did not make the postseason.
They started the season 2-4 but went 4-0-1 in their final five games. They had some fantastic offensive games, scoring over 30 points seven times, but in three games, they were held to seven or fewer points.
1949 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had two All-Pros. Guard Buster Ramsey was a first-team All-Pro, while running back Elmer Angsman was a second-team All-Pro.
Paul Christman started seven games at quarterback, while Jim Hardy started five. Christman passed for 1,015 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 picks. Hardy passed for 748 yards, 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Angsman led the team with 674 rushing yards and scored six rushing touchdowns. Charley Trippi had 553 yards and three scores, while Pat Harder added 447 yards and a team-leading seven rushing touchdowns.
Trippi led the team with 34 receptions, gaining 412 yards and six touchdowns. Mal Kutner had 30 catches for a team-leading 465 yards and five scores.
Red Cochran led the NFL with a 20.7-yard average per punt return and returned two for touchdowns.
Bob Nussbaumer led the NFL with 12 defensive interceptions.
