Teammates and family mourned the passing of Lake Travis High School senior Odin Hensley late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Hensley, a player on the Austin-area high school's varsity football team, was airlifted to Dell Children's Medical Center on Monday after suffering a "cardiac emergency" during a team practice.
Hensley's uncle Gilbert Ruiz posted a Facebook message in remembrance of his nephew late Wednesday night.
"It's with a broken heart to say we lost a young king today," Ruiz wrote. "This kid was full of light and just the greatest all around young man. You will be missed Odin son."
At least 10 of Hensley's Lake Travis Cavaliers teammates took to Instagram on Wednesday night to post messages in his honor.
"Fly high odin. We all have your back and i know the good lord is welcoming you to his kingdom."
As of Thursday morning, neither Lake Travis High School nor Hensley's parents had issued a statement. Lake Travis athletic director and Cavaliers head football coach Hank Carter first reported Hensley's emergency on Monday morning, stating an unnamed player had suffered a "serious health emergency" around 8:00 a.m. and was airlifted to the hospital via Travis County STAR Flight (Shock Trauma Air Rescue).
Support for Hensley and his family poured in from across the state following his hospitalization. A GoFundMe created Tuesday benefiting the Hensley family has raised over $145,000 as of this writing . On Wednesday night, around 350 people attended a prayer vigil for Hensley at Austin's Lake Hill Church. There, teammates, students and coaches gathered near the stage, hugging each other and crying at points. Two of Hensley's teammates spoke and offered prayers.
"I'm crushed that this horrible thing had to happen to him," Lake Travis teammate Jeremiah Strong said at the vigil. "I just pray that through this tragedy that [God] can work and bring people closer to Him."
Members of nearby Westlake High School, Lake Travis' primary rival, also expressed their support for Hensley and his family on Wednesday.
"Westlake Football players and coaches delivered a message of support for Lake Travis' Odin Hensley who suffered a cardiac emergency on Monday," wrote the official Facebook page for Westlake High School Athletics. "Our thoughts are with Odin, his family, his loved ones and his teammates."
