Spencer Jones goes into full detail about his RFA with Thunder, Nuggets
It was quite the hectic weekend for Spencer Jones. He finally learned where he'd call his next NBA home as he navigated through the chaotic nature of restricted free agency. On Saturday morning, he was on the Oklahoma City Thunder . By Sunday night, he was back on the Denver Nuggets .
The Thunder signed Jones to a two-year, $12 million offer sheet on Saturday. The deal was fully guaranteed, which meant OKC put Denver in a tough spot. Don't match and you lose some of your depth; do match and you enter the dreaded second apron. The Nuggets decided to match it with an hour to spare in their 48-hour window.
On his LinkedIn account , Jones reflected on his wild weekend with a thought-out social media post. The 25-year-old would've been an awesome fit in OKC, but remains in Denver. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds this past season. He was promoted from a two-way to a standard contract in Feb. 2026.
"Finally my free agency is over," Jones wrote. "It was a much longer and mentally taxing processing than I expected. 25 days of daily calls with my agent, face to face meetings with opposing GMs, and countless rumors."
In his social media post, Jones wrote four things that stuck out to him in the restricted free agency process. While he secured a bag, he had zero clue where his NBA home for the next couple of seasons would be. Here's what he had to say were his biggest takeaways:
1. Don't get too high or too low
"Everything changes on a whim. A team that's all in on Monday goes quiet by Wednesday. And a team you never spoke to suddenly approaches with a potential offer," Jones wrote. "And sometimes other people's decisions can completely disrupt your timeline (Shoutout LeBron)."
2. The years on your contract can sometimes matter just as much as money
"You only get a couple pay days throughout your career. Timing them up correctly can be the difference of millions," Jones wrote. "Where are you at in your career? What's the trajectory of the team? Expansion teams are coming in two years; a new CBA in 3. All these can affect another payday."
3. The work doesn't stop
"I was in Denver's facilities through much of the negotiations, training around the same people deciding whether to keep me. Passing GMs in the hallway and making small talk," Jones wrote. "Acting like everything was normal when nothing was."
4. Don't plan a vacation until you're officially signed
"I had a trip planned months in advance out of the country. First day of the trip, and my agent calls that a team agreed to our terms. I'm signing," Jones wrote. "Within 24 hours of landing, I'm flying back to the States for a physical. Meet a whole new staff, complete several hours of tests and scans, sign the contract then fly right back. The announcements look clean, but the process is chaos. Glad it's over. Can't wait to do it again in two years."
