Manchester City 2 Bournemouth 1: Thoughts and observations from City’s comeback victory
Manchester City 2 (Marc Guehi 84′, Josko Gvardiol 90+1)
Bournemouth 1 (Marcus Tavernier 26′)
Manchester City have beaten Bournemouth 2-1 today at the Etihad Stadium. Enzo Maresca’s side have started their 2026-27 Premier League campaign with a stirring comeback victory. Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead in the 26th minute and for long stretches of today’s match it just seemed like it wasn’t City’s day. However, Marc Guehi equalized in the 84th minute for City when he headed home a Rayan Cherki corner. Cherki would set up Josko Gvardiol for a 91st-minute winning goal to ensure that City began their new era on the right foot.
Enzo Maresca did alter his starting lineup from Manchester City’s FA Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. At first viewing, it seemed that Elliot Anderson, Rico Lewis, and Nico O’Reilly would start in midfield. Mateo Kovacic was named on the bench for today’s match. Phil Foden was set to play on the right wing, with Antoine Semenyo on the left and Erling Haaland up front. Manchester City’s back four did seem to be Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol. As the game progressed, it was going to be interesting to see if that was how the lineup played out.
First half.
After a fitting and touching tribute to former Manchester City manager and football icon Kevin Keegan, the match kicked off bathed in sunshine. The Etihad Stadium was buzzing, which set the tone for the match ahead.
What immediately stood out was that Marc Guehi lined up in midfield with Rico Lewis slotting in at right-back. Enzo Maresca’s decision to play Guehi in midfield was a clear indication that Enzo Maresca wanted more solidity in the middle of the pitch.
Manchester City created the first chance of the match in the third minute. City played themselves out from back well and Josko Gvardiol set Erling Haaland away from just inside his own half. Haaland drove at the Bournemouth defence to the edge of the Cherries’ area and slipped a ball to Phil Foden on his right. Foden played a beautiful back heel to set Rico Lewis in on goal but his shot from six yards out was well smothered by the oncoming Bournemouth keeper Đorđe Petrovic.
Bournemouth enjoy a spell of possession after Manchester City’s fast start.
Enzo Maresca’s side had made a fast start to the match in the opening 10 minutes. After the 10th minute, Bournemouth did enjoy their first prolonged spell of possession. However, Marco Rose’s side didn’t create any real danger, but they did show that they had settled into the match.
Nico O’Reilly surged down the left wing in the 13th minute and played a superb dinked ball into a great position. Erling Haaland arrived unmarked but he couldn’t get an effort on target. The chance fell to an awkward area for Haaland and he failed to either head the ball or swing his foot at it with the goal at his mercy. A minute later, Josko Gvardiol gave away possession in a dangerous area just outside his own area after Bournemouth pressed him into an error. Bournemouth created an opening for Rayan who saw his shot from the right-hand side of City’s well saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post.
As the game approached the 25th minute, Manchester City were dominating possession but Bournemouth were defending City’s possession play well. Marco Rose’s side did look dangerous when they did get forward but their moments in possession were fleeting but did carry a threat.
To validate my last point, Bournemouth took the lead after playing out brilliantly well from the back.
Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier. Marco Rose’s side played out from the back superbly well without much pressure from the City front line. A long ball was played towards Rayan, and Abdukodir Khusanov and Ruben Dias failed to deal with the threat sufficiently. Rayan picked up the loose ball and played a ball to the right to Evanilson. The Brazilian striker played in a low ball to the back post where Tavernier beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a cracking low finish after ghosting in at the back post. No City defender covered themselves in glory and it allowed Bournemouth to take the lead.
Following Marcus Tavernier’s goal, Manchester City continued to have prolonged spells of possession but weren’t creating any real openings. Bournemouth were defending well and keeping their shape, and looking to hit City on the break. As the game entered the 38th minute, Enzo Maresca’s side needed to increase the tempo of their possession play.
City are denied but Bournemouth quickly have two good chances.
Ðorđe Petrovic kept out an Erling Haaland header in the 39th minute. Ruben Dias played in a cross that Haaland diverted on target, which Petrovic kept out with a strong save. A minute later, Marcus Tavernier curled an effort from 20 yards out just wide of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s far post. Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Justin Kluivert in the 41st minute with a good save low down to his left after Kluivert was picked out in acres of space by Rayan on the left and Kluivert curled a low effort on goal from a great position.
On the verge of halftime, a brief coming together between the two teams broke out. Referee Jarred Gillet let the play run for too long before Evanilson lunged in on Marc Guehi. Evanilson went down theatrically after Josko Gvardiol pushed him away. Evanilson was booked for his challenge on Guehi as Jarred Gillet finally brandished a card. That would be the final moment of action of the first half and Bournemouth would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Thoughts and observations from Manchester City’s first half performance.
Enzo Maresca’s side began the game brightly and the move to pair Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi in midfield did add more solidity to the middle of the pitch for Manchester City. However, as the first half progressed, Bournemouth did grow into the game. They took the lead as City faile...
