When speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Christian Gonzalez was asked about his contract negotiations with the New England Patriots this summer, days after owner Robert Kraft revealed the Patriots offered the cornerback a record deal.
“We love Christian Gonzalez," Kraft said . "We love him as a player. We love him as a person. That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL … It’s the highest-paid contract in Patriots franchise history.”
There are good reasons for Gonzalez to wait to sign the agreement with the Patriots, even if the deal would be record-breaking at this time. The 2023 first-round pick is in competition with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon to sign for the most money, and that could come at nearly $30 million per season.

Certainly, Kraft knew that revealing details of the of the record-breaking offer would cause some to wonder why Gonzalez didn't agree to sign, as the cornerback would appear to some to be greedy in negotiations.
Following a question from a reporter about Kraft's comments on Saturday, Gonzalez said that while he respected the owner of the Patriots, he'd rather the details of the offer stayed in-house.
"I mean, everyone knows what Mr. Kraft has done," Gonzalez said, via video from Chad Graff of The Athletic. "(I have) a ton of respect for Mr. Kraft and what he's done with this franchise.
"And you know, it's just something we don't want to handle in the media. I keep that with my team and go about that... I want to keep that between my team, my agents, and the team in the front office, and let them deal with that."
Gonzalez is expected to eventually sign a contract extension with New England, but it might come at an even higher price than Kraft wanted earlier this summer.
