The French club have “taken the decision to remove the player from first-team training and he will not play for the club again while the transfer window is open”, which points to a player clearly in limbo. As a hopeful Newcastle supporter, this feels like one of those moments where patience is essential, even if it is frustrating. Fernandez-Pardo sounds like a player the club clearly like, and the idea that he would be open to the move is a positive starting point. If he is pushing to leave and Lille really have removed him from first-team training, then there is logic to Newcastle waiting and trying to get the price down from £60m.
At the same time, fans have seen these situations before. When a report says there is “always a suspicion” Newcastle could be used to set the market, alarm bells naturally ring. Supporters will want the club to stay disciplined and avoid overpaying simply because the deadline is getting closer.
That is why El Khannouss is such an interesting part of this story. If Newcastle already know the structure of that deal and have tracked him for a long time, then it suggests smart planning rather than panic. From a fan perspective, that is reassuring. The club need attacking quality, depth and versatility, but they also need to make sure any signing fits the wider project.
Ideally, Newcastle land the player they truly want. If Fernandez-Pardo is that player, great, but only on the right terms. If not, moving quickly for El Khannouss would still feel like a strong outcome. The most important thing is coming out of this window stronger, sharper and without the sense of having been forced into someone else’s negotiation.
