Brewers slot new trade acquisition Dustin May for start Thursday
It's a different energy this time around for Dustin May, moving teams at the Major League Baseball trade deadline for the second straight year. For one thing, he's been through this before and said he saw the writing on the wall in St. Louis. For another, he's having a much better season than he was in 2025.
"It's not the easiest thing coming in, especially at this time of year when everyone's comfortable and got their routines," May said before the Milwaukee Brewers game Aug. 4, two days before he takes the hill for the first time with his new team. "You're the new guy on the block kind of pushing them out of their routines just a smidge. Just trying to get comfortable and get a lay of the land as quickly as possible."
Acquired in a deal to the Cardinals that also included relief pitcher JoJo Romero, May will indeed line up for the series finale against Pittsburgh, facing Pirates all-star right-hander Braxton Ashcraft on Aug. 6.
Dealt last year from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox, May struggled both before and after the deadline, finishing the year with a 4.96 ERA in 25 games (23 starts). He was down to a 4.38 mark this year in 21 starts with the Cardinals, but his FIP (3.14) indicates that he's pitching quite a bit better than that.
"Going into the offseason, the biggest thing for me was kind of getting back to my old throw," May said. "That was something I really worked on and feel like I kind of got close version of my previous self, whether it be arm angle or slot, just to be able to maximize the efficiency.
"I feel like I've had a way more successful season than I did last year."
One of May's best starts came in Milwaukee, when he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before the Brewers rallied for a 2-1 win in May.
"It's hard not to cross your mind [about a no-hitter] in that moment; you try to put it out as much as possible," May said. "You can definitely tell there's a sense of tenseness in the dugout when everybody's trying to avoid you. You're like, 'Buddy, we've got to treat this the same as we were three or four innings ago. It's still the same.' It was cool but it didn't finish."
Now, he's the primary new acquisition for a Brewers team that needed a rotation upgrade, with Brandon Sproat struggling (and optioned to Class AAA Nashville on Aug. 4) and the Brewers still trying to maintain at least six options for those starts.
Romero, the other piece of the deal with St. Louis for two highly regarded minor leaguers, won't be activated until later this month as he returns to strength from an appendectomy. Reliever Antonio Senzatela, acquired from Colorado, was also activated Aug. 4 as the team sent down Garrett Stallings.
May said he anticipates conversations with the Brewers' pitching department to help him "put my best foot forward."
"My biggest thing is just fastball execution," May said. "If I'm able the execute the fastball, the offspeed stuff just plays off of it, whether it's in the zone or not. … I do like the way I've been able to bring back the three-heater mix I've had in the past and become a little more effective."
May immediately becomes the rotation's elder statesman at 29 years old, with his 30th birthday coming Sept. 9.
"I'm a completely open book," May said. "I've been through a lot of the highs and definitely been through some of the lows. I feel like I have a very good mix of how the game can go very well very fast and it can also go very bad, very fast. I would like to say you can talk to really anybody in my past that I've conveyed that to, that I'm a complete open book and you can ask me any question. I'm going to do my best to give my best outlook.
"They're getting a guy with a lot of fight. I definitely show a lot of emotion on the mound. I'm very fiery, and you'll be able to see that on Thursday."
