Geno Smith is back with the New York Jets for the ultimate redemption tour. After watching his career fizzle out with the franchise more than a decade ago, he bounced around the league as a backup before revitalizing his career with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, earning his first career Pro Bowl nod after throwing for a career-high 4,282 yards (eighth-most in the NFL ) and 30 touchdowns against 11 interceptions, while leading the league with a 69.8% completion percentage.
He's coming off a disappointing season with the Raiders, but he's already impressed Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and new offensive coordinator Frank Reich throughout training camp.
Still, Smith and the rest of the Jets offense went through some growing pains in Tuesday's joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith threw two interceptions — one of which was returned for a touchdown — and the offense was reportedly " out of sync " throughout the session. Smith finished 10-of-16 in 11-on-11 drills.
It became evident after Tuesday's practice that there's still work to do before the regular season, which is why Glenn plans to play Smith and the rest of the Jets' starters in Friday's preseason opener against the Buccaneers. "Everybody's playing," Glenn said.

Between a new offensive system under Reich, a new starting quarterback in Smith, and Tuesday's underwhelming showing, it's easy to see why Glenn wants to get his team as many reps together as possible before Week 1. Still, it's an interesting approach. Most teams rest their starters this early in the preseason, especially right after a joint practice.
With the Jets set to face the same Buccaneers team Friday, Tuesday's joint practice could have offered plenty of competitive reps without needing to expose starters to live game action in a contest that ultimately doesn't count. But Glenn clearly believes there's more to gain than lose by pushing his players early.
