Spider-Man: Brand New Day just made over $40 million on a Tuesday , needless to say a record for a random weekday. The film has hit many box office high-water-marks, but that’s also been the case on the review side. At least from audiences.
In addition to tying Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes audience score at 98% , Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also set a record on IMDB based on user scores, with tens of thousands more than we see on Rotten Tomatoes.
As it stands, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has an 8.2/10 on IMDB , really great for the context of that site. That is, in fact, the highest score of any live-action Spider-Man movie ever made. Here’s the data:
I am not surprised that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the lowest, given the reception to that film at the time. Though I didn’t realize that it was just a three-year gap between that movie and Spider-Man: Homecoming entering the MCU. That’s shorter than the gap between No Way Home and Brand New Day.
So, is Brand New Day the overall Spider-champion? No, not quite. It would be deeply unfair to forget about the pair of animated movies that are on top by a significant margin. That would be Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with an 8.4/10 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with an 8.5/10. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has a release date of June 18, 2027, assuming it hits that. It should be the end of the trilogy, and then raises questions about a live-action Miles Morales heading to the MCU, which has been heavily implied for years now. But for live-action? Yes, Brand New Day is on top.
I’d go through and compare the movie to every MCU feature, but that may be a post for another day. I’ll say up front that it’s definitely not #1, as I just checked and Avengers: Endgame has an 8.4. Curious about its 98% audience score buddy, on Rotten Tomatoes, Shang-Chi only has a 7.3, interestingly. I wonder what happened there.
So, it seems this record will hold so long as late-viewers don’t drop the score. Given the excitement for the film and almost universal praise, I doubt it, and it might even go up.
