Are the Rams capable of toppling the NFL sack record?

This week, Broncos defensive tackle D.J. Jones openly predicted that Denver can break the NFL record for sacks in a season. With Myles Garrett in tow, can the Los Angeles Rams also challenge for the league’s all-time sack record?
Currently, the Chicago Bears hold the record with 72, set one season before their legendary and historic Super Bowl run. If the Rams are going to attempt to break the record, they have an uphill climb. Denver fell four sacks shy of tying the mark, making their goal of breaking the record far more realistic in 2026. L.A. finished seventh in the NFL with 47 sacks, only 21 behind the league-leading Broncos.
As far as we know, no Rams player has boasted about the team challenging the record. Even with Garrett leading the pass rush, it’s still a long shot, but not impossible.
The most sacks the Rams have had in a season was 57, unsurprisingly set during the 1999 campaign . Despite all of Aaron Donald’s success with the franchise, the most sacks the defense achieved with him in the lineup was 53 in 2020. So yeah, remember when I said this was going to be an uphill climb?
The ‘99 team wasn’t loaded with dominant sack masters, because several guys contributed. Thirteen players finished with a sack that season, led by All-Pro Kevin Carter’s 17. No other player on the defense had double-digit sacks. For reference, D’Marco Farr had the second-most sacks on the team with 8.5.
If Los Angeles hopes to challenge for the NFL record, guys beyond Garrett must step up.
The Broncos were so dangerous last season because, like that iconic Rams team, they had several contributors. Eight players had at least four sacks, including four with seven sacks or more. Looking at L.A. now, they have plenty of capable players. Byron Young led the team with 12 sacks, and Kobie Turner added seven. Swapping Jared Verse for Garrett should undoubtedly help the unit, given the Florida State product had 12 sacks in two seasons.

The Rams are unlikely to challenge for the NFL’s all-time sack record, but the franchise record is well within their sights. L.A. should be aiming for that goal first, and with the reigning Defensive Player of the Year on defense, potentially Aaron Donald as well, it’s perhaps inevitable that mark will fall. Should the team get enough production from several guys, not just the stars, they could finish with the best pass rushing season in franchise history.
