NASSAU, Bahamas — Before setting off for paradise, Louisville basketball opened a portion of a July 23 practice to the media . Those who attended the session walked past a television in the Planet Fitness Kueber Center displaying the 2027 Final Four logo.
"We have extremely, extremely high expectations for this year's team," coach Pat Kelsey told reporters June 22, three weeks into summer workouts. "But you guys know me; we don't talk about outcomes. We talk about process."
The next step in the process is an exhibition game today against a team from the Bahamas at Baha Mar Convention, Arts and Entertainment Center — our first look at the Cardinals' overhauled roster in action.
UofL was originally scheduled for two exhibitions in Nassau as part of the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League . Game 2 was removed from the itinerary because two players who are working their way back from injuries that required surgery, freshman center Obinna Ekezie Jr. and junior wing Karter Knox , are not expected to suit up. That leaves Kelsey with a nine-man rotation — 10 counting sophomore walk-on guard Will Hanke .
"Playing back-to-back games, where guys are playing extended minutes, in July — it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense," the coach said when asked about the change over the weekend .
Still, there's a whole lot of value in a trip like this for a program like Louisville, which returns only one scholarship player who logged a minute for Kelsey in the red and black last season. The Cards were granted 10 additional summer practices to prepare for today's exhibition — giving all the new faces more time to learn the system and jell on the court.
