A thick layer of fog didn't seem to bother the Watertown High School football team's preparation for its 2026 season opener.
The Arrows held their second preseason practice at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at the Allen Mitchell Athletic Complex.
Head coach John Hodorff and staff are busy helping the Arrows get ready to open their season on Friday, Aug. 28 when they'll host Spearfish at 7 p.m.
It'll be the first of five home games (out of nine regular-season games) for Watertown, which will also host Tea Area on Sept. 11, Pierre on Sept. 18, Mitchell on Oct. 2 for homecoming and Class 11AAA O'Gorman on Oct. 22.
The Arrows also will visit Brookings on Sept. 4, Yankton on Sept. 25, Aberdeen Central at Oct. 9 and Huron on Oct.16.
2026 FOOTBALL: Taking a mid-summer look at the area's high school football teams for 2026
The state's Class 11AA playoffs are slated to open on Thursday, Oct. 29. Eight of the 11 schools in the class will qualify for the postseason. The state Class 11AA championship is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the DakotaDome at Vermillion.
Watertown is coming off 5-5 season that included a first-round playoff loss to Sturgis. Defending state champion Pierre is the preseason favorite in what could be a fairly even Class 11AA field after the Governors. The Arrows are hoping to be in the list of potential contenders.
The South Dakota high school football season is scheduled to begin on Friday, Aug. 21 for Class 11B and Class 9AA, 9A and 9B teams. Class 11AAA, 11AA and 11A teams open on Friday, Aug. 28.
