We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals ' regular season. Today, Monday, August 31, is 13 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 13 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 2013 season for the Cardinals.
A look back at the 2013 season for the Cardinals
The 2013 season opened a new era. It was the first year with Steve Keim as general manager and Bruce Arians as head coach. They traded for Carson Palmer and signed Drew Stanton, completely redoing their quarterback room.
Things started slowly and they started the season 3-4, but then the defense clicked. They won seven of their final 9 games to finish 10-6 and just missed the playoffs.
The defense was a top-10 unit in yards and points, and it set the stage for the greatest three-year run in team history.
2013 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had four Pro Bowlers in 2013:
WR Larry Fitzgerald
CB Patrick Peterson
OLB John Abraham
CB Justin Bethel (special teams)
Peterson was also a first-team All-Pro, while linebacker Karlos Dansby made the All-Pro second team.
Palmer passed for 4,274 yards, 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
Rashard Mendenhall was the Cardinals' leading rusher with 687 yards and eight touchdowns, but Andre Ellington, a rookie, wasn't far behind him with 652 yards, leading the NFL averaging 5.5 yards per rushing attempt.
Fitzgerald had a team-leading 82 receptions for 954 yards and 10 touchdowns. Michael Floyd caught 65 passes for a team-leading 1,041 yards.
Dansby had an elite season that got little attention. I believed he should be Defensive Player of the Year with 122 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits, four interceptions, two returned for touchdowns, 19 pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Four different defenders broke up at least 11 passes that season.
