See the full story · 1 sourcesThe NFL preseason is already making a major ratings statement. The 2026 Hall of Fame Game between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals averaged 7 million viewers.
Front Office Sports shared the figure on X, noting the audience surpassed the most-watched MLB game this season. It also topped every NHL game from last season, including the Stanley Cup Final.
The matchup produced strong entertainment value despite featuring two teams that missed the playoffs last season. Carolina won 33-30 after Haynes King scored the winning touchdown with two seconds remaining.

The game recorded the Hall of Fame Game’s highest audience since 2017. The 7 million viewers fell short of the 8.25 million recorded by the 2017 Cardinals-Cowboys matchup.
King completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. His final drive gave viewers a compelling finish and added significance to an exhibition matchup.
Carson Beck also gave Arizona fans something to watch. The rookie quarterback completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown.
NFL’s audience advantage is clear

That advantage becomes more notable when compared with strong numbers from baseball and hockey.
MLB’s most-watched game this season reached 4 million viewers (3.9 million to be specific on the July 19 game between the Dodgers and Yankees). Sunday Night Baseball has also averaged 2.8 million viewers this season, up 62% year over year.
The NHL enjoyed a strong 2026 postseason as well. The Stanley Cup Final averaged 5.2 million viewers , with Game 6 between the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights reaching 5.9 million.
So, one would likely view the result as more than a preseason ratings win. Football’s shorter schedule creates greater urgency, while the return of games immediately builds anticipation. The Hall of Fame Game also benefited from rookie intrigue and a dramatic finish. Still, the audience shows how much demand exists for NFL football.

That demand gives the league a strong platform heading toward Week 1. It also highlights the challenge facing MLB and NHL broadcasts when competing for national attention.
Additionally, it shows how ready fans are for football before the regular season even begins.
