This is not how the San Francisco 49ers wanted to begin training camp. Injuries are a part of the game. Unfortuantely for this team, it’s become the norm. Rookie Romello Height was carted off the field, which was apparently a leg injury. According to the reporters on hand, the training staff was working on Height’s right leg as well as both his arms.
The training staff was tending to Height for a while before he was lifted onto the cart. The team announced that Height had cramps. So, hopefully there is nothing to see here.
Height is in line to take the place of Bryce Huff as the speed rusher for the defense and be the designated pass rusher. That’ll be a significant role for Height.
Even if Height is fine and it ends up being nothing more than cramps, the 49ers could still look to add a veteran pass rusher if Mykel Williams isn’t ready for the start of the season. Haason Reddick, Joey Bosa, Leonard Floyd, Kyle Van Noy, and Jadeveon Clowney would all be fits.
Here are the other four players who did not participate during Monday’s practice:
OT Vederian Lowe (high ankle sprain) WR Christian Kirk (calf strain) DT Gracen Halton (knee bone bruise) DL Andrew Farmer II (back)
Raheem Morris is scheduled to speak after practice. We’ll see if he provides any further updates on Height.
