President Trump came to the defense of FIFA president Gianni Infantino as he faces mounting pressure to resign as head of the federation. FIFA, the president wrote in a Truth Social post on Monday "would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino." Trump called Infantino "fantastic," and noted he "just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented." "If he is gone," the president added, "it will never be as successful or profitable again!" Infantino is facing widespread calls to step down as head of FIFA after hatching a plan to seek private funding for the World Cup, a plan that the federation backed off of after worldwide outrage. Top governing bodies in football across the world said they would boycott future tournaments if the World Cup was to be sold to private equity, and some have called for Infantino to be ousted from his position. Infantino has for months built a relationship with Trump, awarding him the federation's first ever "peace prize" and praising the president over the U.S. government's work on the 2026 World Cup, the first held on North American soil in more than two decades. The brother of Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner was a lead investor on Infantino's failed private funding bid.
