Los Angeles, which has been known to acquire superstars via trade (Yu Darvish, Manny Machado, Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, Mookie Betts) and free agency (Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Kyle Tucker), made its latest high-profile add in the form of now-former Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal on Sunday.
It's safe to say the organization's reputation helped mitigate the surprise.
"Upset that the same story had to be defended again. The best org had the players to get the deal because the best org is here to win, not raise franchise values," an NL scout told ESPN's Jesse Rogers on Thursday.
"I'm glad we're not in the NL," an AL executive said. "Other than that, no surprise. They've proven that when the best players become available, they're going to go after them."
Rogers spoke with executives and scouts from both the American League and National League, with the universal opinion being that the return was more than enough for a rental piece -- though there's no doubt LA now has the upper hand on any other team in negotiations with Skubal.
It'll remain to be seen whether or not that leads to a long-term extension.
