Stafford just signed a one-year, $55 million contract extension with the Rams earlier this year, despite there being concerns that he might retire.
But with Stafford and the Rams being just one game shy of the Super Bowl and him winning the MVP award, the star chose to sign a big-money deal and stick around.

Why Matthew Stafford was handed $534K tax lien by California government
According to exclusive information obtained by Page Six , Matthew Stafford was sent a $534K tax lien by the California Franchise Tax Board on July 14th.
This lien is tied to property and property rights Stafford currently owns or is going to purchase in the future. The reporting claims that the lien amount could accrue interest if it goes unpaid.
Los Angeles County officials also told Page Six that the lien is still active and has not been released – meaning it hasn’t been paid by the quarterback yet.
Matthew and his wife, Kelly Stafford, have been aggressively putting together an impressive real-estate portfolio since moving to Los Angeles in 2021.
In 2022, Stafford purchased a $10.5 million mansion in Hidden Hills, a premier real estate location where many of Los Angeles’ wealthy and most famous people reside.
The pair didn’t stop there, as they bought the neighbouring house the following year for an eye-watering $28.15 million.
However, the pair haven’t just been adding to their real estate portfolio, as they also had three other Hidden Hills mansions that they offloaded, making $21.3 million from the combined sales of these houses.
Stafford’s latest $55 million contract extension is set to make him one of the best-paid NFL players of all time, taking his career earnings to more than $500 million.
Realistically, this tax lien wouldn’t leave much of a dent in his finances, but the superstar could take legal action to try and fight this request.
However, given the fact that the new NFL season is set to kick off in a few weeks’ time, it is unlikely that Stafford, or the Rams, would want his attention diverted by a lengthy legal battle off the field.
When Stafford and his representatives were asked for a comment on this matter, they offered no response, which could suggest they are working on their next move regarding this ordeal.
