That's precisely what general manager Darren Mougey did. Mougey selected former Texas Tech EDGE David Bailey at No. 2 overall in the 2026 NFL draft, and he also signed veteran Joseph Ossai in free agency .
Ossai was signed to a three-year contract worth $34.5 million. He'll earn an average annual salary of $11.5 million per campaign. It's a reasonable term, but make no mistake, the Jets expect a hefty return on their offseason investment.
Will McDonald IV was the Jets' sack leader last season with eight . No other Jets defender had more than four sacks. Ossai had a career-high five sacks last season, making it his second consecutive campaign with five QB takedowns.
Ossai has been a modest sack producer throughout his underrated career. The Jets are probably expecting a similar output. With Ossai, Bailey, McDonald, and Kingsley Enagbare at the position, the defensive line should have a more stable rotation, making them less reliant on one player (like they were last year).
The Jets are better and deeper at the pass-rushing positions now. If Ossai produces another five sacks, he'll be an effective member of a four-man rotation. The Jets should end up pleased with Ossai's production.
