Deebo Samuel is set to return to where it all began, with the San Francisco 49ers bringing back their former star wide receiver.
In 2021, Deebo Samuel was First Team All-Pro, on top of his game and bulldozing defenses while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. He was giving opponents headaches, no one knew what to do with him.
Cut to 2026, and there were some mild doubts whether Samuel would have a team going into next season. Such is life in the NFL, it doesn’t take much time for things to change drastically.
Samuel played last season with the Washington Commanders after being traded, grabbing 72 catches and five touchdowns for 727 yards. He won’t be doing it again, though, it’s time for the prodigal son to return.

49ers sign Samuel to 1-year, $7 million deal
San Francisco has some concerns going into the 2026-27 NFL season in terms of their wide receivers. Ricky Pearsall has injured his right knee and the receiver corps were starting to look thin.
They have addressed this by bringing Samuel back to Santa Clara, albeit on a short-term deal. According to reports, Samuel has signed only for one year, receiving $7 million.
Samuel was a staple in the 49ers offense until 2025, coining the term ‘wide back’ to describe his skillset of playing in the backfield despite being a receiver.
He enjoyed all his success in San Fran as a part of the perennially contending 49ers. He may not be the same beast he was at his peak in 2021, but this news is sure to excite 49ers fans regardless.
