Drake Maye does not want the New England Patriots taking it easy on each other during training camp.
The Patriots quarterback addressed the spirited competition between wide receiver A.J. Brown and cornerback Christian Gonzalez after another intense practice in Foxborough. The two stars have repeatedly matched up during camp, creating the kind of physical, competitive battles that occasionally include a few words after the play.
Maye is enjoying every second of it.
“You like to see a little trash talk,” Maye said in a video shared by the Patriots .
Rather than viewing the exchanges as a potential problem, Maye believes the intensity can help prepare New England for the pressure it will encounter during the season.

Maye described the competition between Brown and Gonzalez as “game-like” and “playoff-like.” He also praised both players for refusing to go through the motions against one another.

That is exactly what the Patriots need from two of their most important players. Brown gives Maye an established No. 1 receiver capable of transforming New England’s passing attack. Gonzalez, meanwhile, is expected to anchor the secondary as one of the NFL’s premier young cornerbacks.
Every rep between them provides a legitimate challenge. Brown must work against an elite cover defender, while Gonzalez gets an opportunity to sharpen his technique against a powerful receiver who has recorded at least 1,000 yards in each of his last four seasons. The trash talk only adds another competitive element.

Patriots Are Building Around A Different Edge
Maye’s response also reveals something about the personality of New England’s franchise quarterback. The 23-year-old is typically calm and measured when speaking publicly, but he clearly appreciates teammates who bring emotion to the field. He expressed a similar opinion during the 2025 preseason when he said players talking trash through the whistle were exactly the kind of teammates he wanted in the locker room.
Maye is not asking for reckless behavior or practice fights. He simply likes the edge that comes with two accomplished players challenging each other and refusing to back down. That mentality fits the culture head coach Mike Vrabel has established in New England. Vrabel wants a physical team that can handle difficult moments, and training camp is where that identity must be developed.
The Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl appearance, so expectations have changed dramatically. Maye understands that returning to that stage will require the team to practice with urgency long before the regular season begins.
If Brown and Gonzalez exchange a few words while pushing each other toward that goal, their quarterback has no problem with it.
