Senator Tommy Tuberville said Wednesday he still hasn’t received answers about the health status of his Republican colleague Mitch McConnell, weeks after he pushed for more transparency.
“I don’t know anything,” Tuberville, 71, told independent reporter Nicholas Ballsay after being asked if he had any update on McConnell.
As far as Tuberville knows, McConnell, 84, remains in the hospital and undergoing rehabilitation after suffering from a fall in June that left him “briefly unconscious” in addition to battling a case of pneumonia.
“He lived next door to me. I mean, he’s still in the hospital, I mean doing rehab,” Tuberville added.
In late July, Tuberville had expressed frustration that Republican Senate leadership had not provided a comprehensive update on McConnell, who had been missing from votes for weeks . At the time, McConnell’s office had only released one statement , despite his prolonged absence.
“Somebody needs to do something,” Tuberville said July 21. “Somebody needs to come out and put a little video out.”
The Alabama senator had expressed concern that if McConnell were to miss votes through August , it would leave Republicans in a vulnerable position – unable to pass legislation before their four-and-a-half-week recess.
At the end of July, McConnell’s office released another statement, as well as a photo , saying the Kentucky Republican was still in rehabilitation but not medically cleared to return to office.
Tuberville reiterated his concern Wednesday, saying “some” business will likely need to be pushed to a later date because Republicans don’t have the votes to pass it.
Among the votes senators are hoping to fulfill before leaving Capitol Hill for several weeks is confirming President Donald Trump’s attorney general nominee, Todd Blanche.
Other than the brief update, McConnell’s office has remained tight-lipped about the senator’s condition.
Speculation has run rampant about McConnell’s mental and physical acuity, with online conspiracy theories suggesting he is actually deceased or incapacitated . There has been no evidence to support those claims.
In photos released by his office, McConnell appears upright, fully dressed and smiling.
But other lawmakers have urged McConnell to release more information about his health to reassure constituents that he can continue to serve until the end of his term in January 2027.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has sent multiple letters to McConnell’s office demanding he provide more concrete evidence that he can remain in office.
