The Syracuse football team is into week two of its August training camp schedule as it prepares for its season opener on Sept. 5.
During Wednesday's practice, a familiar face to Orange fans was in attendance. Former Syracuse player and former NFL head coach Tom Coughlin was there in support of his alma mater.
The Tom Coughlin file
A native of Waterloo, N.Y, Coughlin was a three-year letterman during his playing career at SU. Coughlin's tenure in Central New York featured multiple Hall of Famers within the program, including his head coach Ben Schwartzwalder and his teammates Floyd Little and Larry Csonka.
Following his playing career, Coughlin started his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1969. After four seasons at Division III RIT, Coughlin spent the 1974-1980 seasons as a member of the Syracuse coaching staff.
After taking on numerous assistant coaching jobs at both the college and professional levels, Coughlin was named the head coach of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995.
For 20 seasons, Coughlin served as a head coach in the NFL. His 170 career victories rank 19th all-time in league history. Coughlin's highest achievement as a head coach were his two Super Bowl wins as a the head coach of the New York Giants.
Why was Coughlin there?
No exact reason was given by the team as to why Coughlin was in attendance for Wednesday's practice. Fran Brown has had multiple former players and coaches attend various practices in both the spring and summer since he became head coach in 2024.

Coughlin may have noticed these same observations from Wednesday's practice that we noted at SyracuseRoundtable. Some of the standout storylines included:
-Much higher intensity from the padded practice than in practices that preceded this one
-Fran Brown's energy continues to stay high during competitive drills involving multiple positions
What's the future look like for the current Orange?
The Orange have a closed practice on Thursday and will open the practice again to the media on Friday. SyracuseRoundtable's on-scene coverage will continue Friday with practice scheduled to take place again at the Ensley Center.
Syracuse has 13 more scheduled practices in the remainder of August.
