Tottenham need an upgrade on Mathys Tel before the transfer window closes after poor performance against Newcastle
Tottenham Hotspur suffered a second successive Premier League defeat of the season, losing 2-0 to Newcastle United today.
Spurs were beaten by a side simply better on the day, and manager Roberto De Zerbi will be well aware of the massive work ahead.
The Tottenham boss needs to get his troops firing after a busy summer marked by big spending on Omar Marmoush, Mateus Fernandes, Savio and Sandro Tonali.
He also needs upgrades at certain positions before the transfer window closes, as players such as Mathys Tel have failed to reach the level required at a club with Spurs’ ambitions.
Tel was deployed on the left wing, but he did little of note.
The 21-year-old did not complete any of his two attempted crosses, and did not register any dribbles from two attempts.
He also lost five out of six ground duels, recorded three unsuccessful touches and lost possession 15 times.
His final touch was a poor free-kick that neatly exited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Mohammed Kudus replaced him.
De Zerbi believes he can become a ‘ great player ‘ and reportedly wants to keep him, but he shouldn’t be starting.

Spurs needed an upgrade on the Frenchman on the left side of attack, and this performance only reinforced that notion.
Cody Gakpo rejected Tottenham in favour of a move to Manchester City, meaning they need to look at another attacker.
They must not repeat the mistake they have made throughout this window – overpaying for decent players. They need a real ceiling-raiser on the left flank.
Spurs will hope they can bounce back from the poor Premier League results next week when they face Nottingham Forest.
Tonali, Fernandes, Marmoush, Savio and others need to find their groove and start displaying the levels expected of them as Spurs bid to avoid another relegation battle.
