Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is just a few months removed from his college football career, but he knows how quickly the sport evolves.
In a recent conversation with On3 Sports, Mendoza admitted college football is "a crazy space and it evolves every single year” while discussing name, image and likeness. He suggested athletes should look for the best opportunity over the most money, but admitted that his advice might not be relevant in the evolving landscape of the sport.
“So when I’m talking about this year, it’s changed so much where I’m almost considered like a ‘boomer’ in NIL because I experienced the year before. Now, the quarterback market is completely different. Whether you like to say it or not, reaching out to different players when they enter the portal, that system is different, as well. Coaches moving," he said.

However, he ultimately made it clear that he thinks college football still holds a special place when it not only benefits the athlete and university, but the fanbase as well. “I feel like it’s evolving every single year where maybe my advice is not going to be the most recent," he said. "But that’s my experience and I believe that hopefully, it comes out to a good structure where it’s benefiting both the player … the college football fan and the university, as well as the well-being of college football. I think there’s a thing that makes college football special.” Ensuring the college football product benefits the athlete, university and fan feels like timeless advice.
