Yet, stroll around West Yorkshire right now, and you quickly realise statistics mean precious little when a manager’s mind is made up that he is a low-priority man . Daniel Farke wants a new leading man. Simple as that.
Farke looks elsewhere for Premier League firepower
Farke wants a traditional centre-forward to hold up the ball, bully centre-backs, and trigger the team’s pressing system off the ball. They have Dominic Calvert-Lewin for that. That leaves Joel Piroe in a tough spot.
Despite doing everything asked of him last season, the 26-year-old Dutchman finds himself pushed right to the edge of the first-team picture. Farke clearly harbours doubts about whether Piroe has the raw pace, athletic engine, and mobility required to lead the line in the top flight.
With just 12 months remaining on his contract at Elland Road, the hierarchy seems open to business. A cut-price departure before deadline day is now a genuine possibility, with Birmingham City already keeping close tabs on the situation.

Let’s be realistic about what lies ahead. Top-tier survival is a bloody business. Turning your back on a player who delivered 19 league goals for promotion is a massive risk, no matter how limited his defensive work might look on a tactical board. Critics constantly point out his flaws. He doesn’t sprint 50 yards to close down defenders. He isn’t going to out-muscle massive international centre-halves in physical battles.
None of that changes the basic truth: the man knows where the back of the net is. Finding players with that natural instinct inside the penalty box costs serious money in today’s market. Whatever small fee Leeds United collect by shipping Piroe off to the Midlands won’t even cover half the cost of replacing those nineteen goals.
Retaining Piroe provides essential depth off the bench
Cashing in on a proven goalscorer for a small fee during a summer of massive transition is short-sighted. Farke can bring in his physical focal point without throwing Piroe out the door for cheap.
Think about the grind of a top-flight campaign. Late in matches, when defenders are gassed and tired, bringing on an instinctive finisher off the bench changes everything. You don’t need him to press for 90 minutes; you need him to sniff out one chance in the six-yard box. Keep the player, adjust his role, and hold onto that finishing instinct. Selling him now for next to nothing is a mistake Leeds will regret the second results turn sour.
