The nearly perfect start to his NFL career continued this weekend for former Illinois star Devon Witherspoon this weekend.
An All-American cornerback in 2022 for Bret Bielema's team, Witherspoon was the fifth pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Pat on the back to the Seattle Seahawks, who saw Witherspoon as a guy who could help them transform their defense. So cool when it works out like it is supposed to.
In each of his first three seasons with Seattle, Witherspoon has earned a spot in the Pro Bowl. And gained a reputation as a guy you don't challenge, The lockdowniest of all cornerbacks and someone who makes life miserable for opposing offenses.
The NFL pays big bucks for disrupters like Witherspoon and did on Saturday. The team and the player have settled on a four-year contract extension worth $132 million. Cha-ching.
Josh Whitman might want to make a congratulatory call to the new rich guy. Maybe mention he will be needed back on campus in a few years for his Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame induction. Oh, and suggest if he feels so inclined, the football program can always use a few things.
When Witherspoon was here as a player, everyone liked him. He worked hard, was a good teammate, respected those he came in contact with.
As an interview subject, he grew more comfortable each year. Covering his draft in Kansas City, Mo., with Joey Wright was one of the highlights of my career. Turns out that was only the start of the fun for Witherspoon, who picked up a Super Bowl ring and is well on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And there is the really big check, Nice to see somebody live up to or surpass expectations.
