Adley Rutschman, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, will take the next step in his recovery from left wrist discomfort by beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
Rutschman is expected to catch five innings in his first appearance in a game since July 18. The Woo Sox were quick to promote the appearance of the three-time All-Star on X -- with the plan being for him to get at least two at-bats.
Boston isn't exactly relying on the recent acquisition to return to the lineup, as the offense has scored six runs per game across a 18-3 stretch since July 17. Connor Wong and Jake Rogers, the two current options behind the plate, aren't exactly known for their offensive prowess, however, combining for a below-average OPS+.
Rutschman has seemingly gotten back on track at the plate between stints on the injured list this season, as he is slashing .251/.331/.433 with an 115 OPS+.
If you can add that guy to the lineup, while also making an upgrade defensively, you're happy to do it.
