The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers kick off the 2026 preseason with their Hall of Fame Game clash on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC, and Week 1 of the preseason officially kicks off the following week on Aug. 13.
As we count down the days until the start of the NFL regular season — which kicks off with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9 — we continue to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.
This week, we’re looking as the players most in danger of being cut during the preseason, and we’ve arrived at the Philadelphia Eagles .
Dalton is one of three QBs vying for a roster spot behind starter Jalen Hurts. And of the three, Dalton may be the odd man out. Tanner McKee was generating lots of trade buzz last year after his strong preseason performances, and unless the Eagles get an offer for him that blows them away, they’re likely to hold onto him.
Philly drafted Cole Payton in the fifth round of April’s draft. He’s a player a lot of scouts were high on, and he could be the Eagles’ long-term successor to Hurts in a few years. I just don’t see Philadelphia carrying four QBs on its roster, meaning Dalton could be on the wrong side of cut day.
The Eagles’ running back room is just as crowded as their QB room. Behind Saquon Barkley, Philly has Tank Bigsby, Elijah Mitchell, Dameon Pierce, Will Shipley, and Carson Steele.
Bigsby showed flashes last year that he could be a solid 1B to Barkley. Shipley is a dual-threat out of the backfield, so he should be safe too. The real competition comes down to Mitchell vs. Pierce. The latter is two years younger dealt with nearly as many injuries as Mitchell, which is why he could be looking for a new team soon.
The Eagles have 12 receivers on their roster heading into camp. That number will be cut in half by Week 1, and Elijah Moore could be one of the unlucky ones who doesn’t make it. DeVonta Smith, Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks, and Hollywood Brown are presumably locks to make the 53-man roster.
That leaves Moore to battle it out with Johnny Wilson, Quez Watkins, Samori Toure, Darius Cooper, Britain Covey, Erik Ezukanma, and Danny Gray for what’s likely two roster spots. Both Wilson and Cooper are younger, and my money is on them.
