3x3 basketball is a variation of the sport that is being used at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Unlike traditional basketball, which is played over a full court and between two teams, 3x3 is between two teams of three that use only one half of the court and compete to score in the same basket.
At this year's Games, there are men's and women's 3x3 competitions, as well as 3x3 wheelchair basketball for both genders.
It is the 3x3 format's second outing at the Commonwealth Games, having also been played in 2022. It has also been played in the Youth Olympics since 2010, European Games since 2015 and Olympics since 2020.
The sport has been played globally for decades, with rules starting to become standardized in the United States during the late 2000s.
Team England are the reigning men's Commonwealth champions, with the nation's women also taking silver in Birmingham 2022 after losing out to Canada.
In the 2022 wheelchair 3x3, Team England took bronze in both the men's and women's events, with Australia and Canada taking gold in the respective competitions.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have confirmed that performances in the Commonwealth Games will contribute to world ranking points for the nations that are competing.
What are the rules of 3x3 basketball?

Matches of 3x3 basketball are played over a single 10-minute period. The objective for both teams is to score 21 points. Whichever team does so first wins the match.
If neither team reaches 21 points inside 10 minutes, the winner is the team that has the most points when the clock runs out. If teams are tied, there is overtime to determine a winner.
In overtime, the first team to score two points is declared the winner.
Teams take it in turns to have possession. When a match starts, the team in possession will start with the ball and with all players outside of the arc. The defensive team starts with all three of its players inside the arc.
Teams have 12 seconds on the game clock to make a shot. Otherwise, possession is given to the opposing team.
Every successful shot taken from inside the arc is worth one point, including free throws. All successful shots taken from outside the arc are worth two points.
When possession changes, the team gaining it must start with the ball from either outside of the arc, dribbling to a position outside of the arc or passing to a teammate that is stood outside of the arc.
