As the Countdown to Kickoff continues, we’ll highlight a former Horned Frog whose jersey number coincided with the number of days remaining until the opener. At No. 31 is former TCU guard/end Raymond “Rags” Matthews!
Matthews was the first football player at TCU to receive All-American honors. He did so in 1927, when he also took home First-Team All-Southwest Conference honors. Matthews lettered three times and was named TCU’s MVP after both the 1926 and 1927 seasons. The Horned Frogs went 17-5-5 in the three seasons Matthews played under coach Matty Bell. In 1927, Matthews was selected to play in the Shrine East-West All-Star Game.
Named to the All-Time All-Southwest Conference Team in 1969 and elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971, Matthews was enshrined in the TCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969. Prior to TCU, Matthews attended Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth. He played guard at TCU before moving to end after his sophomore year. He earned varsity letters in four sports: football, basketball, baseball and track.
Matthews passed away on Jan. 2, 1999 at the age of 93.
