Toronto columnist says Mitch Marner was ‘spoiled’ & blasts agent for ‘spewing drivel
Mitch Marner ‘s departure from Toronto has once again become a hot topic across the N HL . Fresh comments from his agent, Darren Ferris, have reignited discussion about the winger’s relationship with the Toronto Maple Leafs .
Ferris recently claimed the organization failed to support Marner throughout his nine seasons. He argued the winger became an unfair target despite sacrificing for the team and playing through injuries.
Ferris said that Marner was “scrutinized for every game. Him and his family criticized after every loss, receiving threats on social media, which was disturbing,” before mentioning, “You can’t pinpoint one person.”

Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons strongly rejected that argument. Simmons wrote, “Where exactly the Leafs failed to protect Marner in all of this is anyone’s guess… All he did was contribute until the playoffs began.”
Marner finished his Toronto career with 741 points in 657 regular-season games. He also produced 63 playoff points in 70 games, the highest postseason total among Maple Leafs players during his tenure.
Despite those numbers, Toronto never advanced beyond the second round with Marner, Auston Matthews, and William Nylander leading the core.
Simmons wrote, “They provided him with everything he needed to succeed. They spoiled their players.”
He also criticized Ferris directly, writing, “It’s easy now to understand Marner’s feelings about the Leafs when you hear the agent spewing such drivel.”
Marner left Toronto after signing an eight-year, $96 million contract before being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights . His departure followed another disappointing playoff exit a year before major organizational changes.
Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler has also defended the Maple Leafs, saying, “$166,743,000 USD in guaranteed contracts (nearly a quarter of a billion dollars CAD) signed by age 28 by the way. Without counting any of the endorsement $ that came with being a hometown star playing for the Leafs.”

During his interview with Puck Pedia, Ferris insisted Toronto failed to stand behind his client during those difficult moments. “He really bled for that team, and he was never protected by his organization in my opinion,” he said.
He also praised Marner’s new organization.
“Kelly McCrimmon, George McPhee, quality people,” Ferris said. “They’ve treated Mitch and his family very well, protected them whenever there was misinformation in the public.”
Simmons viewed the situation differently. He argued playoff disappointment, not organizational neglect, led to criticism from frustrated fans. He also noted Brendan Shanahan lost his job after the team’s failures, showing responsibility extended beyond one player.
Marner’s first season in Vegas strengthened Ferris’ argument that a new environment helped. He recorded 80 regular-season points before leading the 2026 playoffs with 29 points in 22 games. Vegas reached the Stanley Cup Final, while Marner set the fastest hat trick in Final history.

The disagreement reflects two competing views of Marner’s Toronto legacy. Ferris sees a star left unsupported by his franchise. Simmons sees a highly paid player who received every opportunity but could not escape the pressure that follows repeated playoff disappointment.
