The Milwaukee Brewers are sitting atop the NL Central and are expected to be buyers at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. The only question for the Brewers is not whether they're going to buy, but how far they'll go.
They've been one of the teams linked to Tarik Skubal most often this season, but they might not land the Detroit Tigers ace. Instead, however, the Brewers could go after a different All-Star pitcher that they reportedly "would love" to acquire.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan , the Brewers would "love" to acquire San Diego Padres two-time All-Star and 0.79 ERA closer Mason Miller at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.

"The Brewers aren't exclusively focused on Skubal," Passan writes. "They love the idea of Mason Miller joining what's already a superpen."
Adding Miller would cost a fortune, potentially even more than it'd take to acquire Skubal from the Tigers this summer. The reason why is the massive difference in club control.
Skubal is a rental who will hit free agency after 2026. Miller, meanwhile, is under club control through the 2029 season. That's 3.5 seasons of club control.
Miller is 27 years old, and this season, he has been better than ever. In 44 outings, Miller has a 3-1 record with a 0.79 ERA, 2.7 bWAR (career-high), and 28 saves (leads all NL pitchers) with 85 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched.

His 525 ERA+ shows just how ridiculously good he's been this season. Miller would be a massive upgrade for the Brewers' bullpen, taking what's already a solid group to being one of the best in baseball.
But to land Miller from A.J. Preller and the Padres, it's going to cost a fortune. The Brewers might have to give up a top-five prospect, and likely much more, to pry Miller from the Padres.
Would it be worth it? Maybe having a great closer like Miller could be the difference in beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the postseason.
The Brewers would "love to acquire Miller in a trade this summer, but such a deal is going to be difficult to accomplish. But the Brewers should try, as Miller is the kind of player worth splurging on at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
