Hamilton West Side's next opponent in the Little League World Series has been one of the biggest stories of the tournament.
Alabama's Phenix City Little League has been making waves thanks to star pitcher/shortstop Kinley Rasmus. She's captured national attention as she's set virtually every girls record in the Little League World Series , standing out both at the plate and on the mound.
As a batter, Rasmus has tied the all-time tournament record for a girl with five total hits. She became just the fifth girl in tournament history to achieve a multi-hit game with a single and double against California, then did it again with two hits in a comeback against Washington.
As a pitcher, Rasmus's 14 strikeouts tie her with Mo'ne Davis for most by a girl in LLWS history. In her pitching debut against Washington she threw eight strikeouts, matching Davis' single-game record.
She's led Phenix City down a similar path to Hamilton's West Side. After being knocked down to the Elimination Bracket by Washington in game one, Alabama has won three straight elimination games.
Phenix City stunned California with a 12-2 win, then made a huge comeback from five runs down to beat Pennsylvania 6-5, and finally got revenge against Washington with a 2-0 win.
Who is Kinley Rasmus?
Kinley is the daughter of ex-MLB pitcher Cory Rasmus and niece to former MLB outfielder Colby Rasmus. Cory played for both the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels in his MLB career, but also led Phenix City to the 1999 LLWS championship game. Colby played for five teams over the course of his 10-year MLB career: St. Louis, Toronto, Houston, Tampa Bay, and Baltimore.
Another of her uncles, Jeff Mathis, is also an MLB catcher. His big-league career spanned six teams over 16 seasons, beginning with the Angels in 2005 and concluding with the Braves in 2021.
Kinley's cousin, Ryker, is also in the Alabama lineup. He plays first base and pitches for Phenix City.
How do Little League pitching rules affect Kinley Rasmus?
Rasmus threw 54 pitches in 4.2 shutout innings of relief against Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Her heroics on the mound led Alabama to a 6-5 victory after trailing 5-0 in the second inning.
Due to Little League World Series pitching rules , Rasmus will not be eligible to pitch against Hamilton West Side. She has to take three days of mandated rest, meaning her next appearance would be in the Elimination Bracket semifinals on Aug. 27 should Alabama advance.
Here's a full breakdown of the pitching rest rules:
