Sign-and-trade deals around the NBA are not easy, something the Los Angeles Lakers found out the hard way this offseason.
The Lakers, who completed a sign-and-trade deal for Walker Kessler, had to give a whole lot for a player they wanted. It's the unfortunate reality of sign-and-trade deals, but that's just the name of the game at this point.
There are going to be sign-and-trades over the next few months and years that aren't nearly as much as what the Lakers had to give up for Kessler, but they'll be for worse players. One of those guys is Jonathan Kuminga, though it still remains uncertain whether the Lakers actually have a chance to land him because of their limited assets.
While the Lakers aren't guaranteed to land him, there's been some communication between both sides, with obvious interest.
“That didn’t stop the Lakers’ pursuit of Kuminga, as multiple members of the organization, including players, reached out and expressed their desire for him to join them. Pelinka has remained in touch with Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, subtly improving their offer in recent days, league sources told ESPN, while reiterating to Kuminga his importance to what the Lakers are building around Doncic, a likely starting role and what the opportunity could do for his career,” Anthony Slater wrote .
The biggest part here is that Kuminga will have a rather big role in the Lakers' rotation. It was uncertain whether he'd be a starter, but as Slater touched on here, a likely starting role shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Kuminga would also be able to regain some value because of playing with Luka Doncic. Doncic has continuously proven that he can get the best out of his teammates, something that should interest Kuminga.
