According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, the NCAA has recently discussed the possibility of allowing summer exhibition games between member institutions. While no decision has been made, the idea will continue to be evaluated moving forward.
If the proposal is approved, it would create exciting opportunities for programs like Kentucky to face elite competition months before the regular season begins. Imagine preseason summer exhibitions featuring Kentucky against Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Gonzaga, Purdue, or other national powers that may not appear on the Wildcats’ regular-season schedule.
Kentucky is no stranger to summer competition. Most recently, the Wildcats traveled to Canada for the 2023 GLOBL JAM tournament before the 2023-24 season. The program also took international trips to the Bahamas ahead of the 2022-23, 2018-19, and 2014-15 seasons, using those games to build chemistry before the regular season tipped off.
Those international tours were previously limited to once every four years, but recent NCAA rule changes now allow teams to participate annually. Expanding that to include exhibition games against fellow NCAA programs would give coaches another valuable opportunity to evaluate their teams while giving fans blockbuster matchups during the offseason.
Although discussions remain in the early stages, the possibility of summer exhibitions between college basketball’s biggest brands would generate significant excitement. For Kentucky fans, seeing the Wildcats square off against blue-blood programs in August could become one of the highlights of the college basketball calendar.
