The first week of the high school football season in the Greater Savannah area featured non-stop action with some top teams delivering, with others having tough debuts under the lights on Friday night.
Calvary Day battled back from an early deficit to win big in an impressive second half performance at Glynn Academy.
Benedictine had a tough go of it in its opener as visiting Toombs County rolled to a dominating win at Memorial Stadium.
Bethesda won its 14th straight with an impressive victory in its home opener over another defending SCISA State champaion in Northwood Academy.
All three of those teams are back in action this week.
Here's a look at the schedule of games and four big games to watch in Week 2 of the high school season in the Greater Savannah area.
Jenkins (0-1) at Calvary Day (1-0), Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The schools are less than two miles apart, but have played just twice in the last decade. Calvary beat the visiting Warriors 34-31 in overtime in 2024 and Jenkins beat the Cavs last season 41-33 at Memorial Stadium in a game that decided the Region 3-3A title.
The teams aren't in the same region this year, but are keeping the neighborhood rivalry alive in a game that is expected to draw a big crowd.
Calvary is coming off a win at Glynn Academy where the Cavs scored 42 unanswered points to roll to a 49-22 win. James Mobley IV threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns with Marlon Knight Jr. catching seven passes for 135 yards and two scores. Jalen Hicks had six receptions for 88 yards and a score and Zay Middleton led the Cavs with 108 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Linebackers Gabe Ausfeld (nine tackles) and Jeffrey McCormick (eight tackles) led the Cavalier defense that pitched a second-half shutout. Calvary, which reached the Class A-3A Private state finals last year where it lost to Hebron Christian 28-21, is ranked No. 1 in the state among Class 2A-4A Private teams by the AJC.
Jenkins is coming off a 31-6 loss at Lowndes, a Class 7A squad that reached the second round of the Class 6A playoffs last year.
Sophomore Benari Wells-Williams was 4 of 8 passing for 84 yards and senior standout Torean Wilson had a pair of receptions for 59 yards.
Senior linebacker Branden Brown had 11 tackles and Ronnie Taylor, who has committed to the University of Delaware, had seven stops for the Warriors
Bethesda (2-0) at Savannah Christian (1-0), Friday at 7 p.m. at Pooler Stadium
This will be the first meeting between the Savannah private schools and has an interesting storyline as SCPS coach Baker Woodward started his coaching career as an assistant at Bethesda under Antwain Turner, in his 22nd season leading the Blazers.
Bethesda won the SCISA Class 2A title for the second time in three years last season, when it finished 12-0. The Blazers are picking up where they left off with two dominating wins to start the season.
Turner's son, junior quarterback Jordan Turner, has thrown for 420 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions and ran for 205 yards and five scores ― averaging 17.1 yards per carry. Senior MJ Scott has five receptions for 131 yards and two scores.
The Blazer defense is led by senior linebacker Isaiah Jones and junior Ka'Mond Young, who had 21 tackles each.
They will need to be on top of their game to slow down an SCPS running game that racked up 378 yards rushing in a 35-13 win at Athens Academy last week.
Sophomore Wesley Dinkins ran for 138 yards and a pair of scores and senior Cain Tomlin had 148 yards rushing and a score on just eight carries.
Senior linebacker Ivyn Richardson led the Raiders with 13 tackles, while Jameer Jackson, Aiden Frazier and Jalen Wright added 11 each.
Hebron Christian (1-0) at Benedictine (0-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium
Cadet fans are looking to see how Benedictine will respond to its disappointing 58-21 loss to visiting Toombs County in its opener last week.
Now BC has Hebron Christian (1-0), the defending Class A-3A Private School state champs, to deal with this week.
The Lions are coming off a 43-16 win over Carver in the Corky Kell Classic. Beau Bennett was named the game's MVP after rushing for 83 yards and a pair of scores on 10 carries, with a team-high 10 tackles. Junior Fred Moses, a defensive lineman with offers including Wake Forest and App State, had five tackles and 2.5 sacks as Hebron held Carver to seven yards rushing and just 97 yards of total offense, according to the AJC.
The Lions have a four-star offensive lineman in senior Elijah Morrison, a 6-foot-5, 290-pounder who has committed to play at Clemson.
Benedictine is looking to rebound from the lopsided loss to a talented Toombs County squad.
Senior Omari Burse was 4 of 14 passing for 113 yards with a 50-yard scoring pass to Eron Mallard, the Purdue bound senior who had four receptions for 113 yards.
Stanley Smart Jr., the senior who has committed to Virginia Tech, led BC with 63 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Rasheen Jackson led BC with 12 tackles and Nick Jackson had nine stops. Caden Thomas had five tackles and a sack for the Cadets.
Liberty County (0-1) at Richmond Hill (1-0), Friday at 7 p.m.
Richmond Hill is coming off a 22-21 win over visiting Effingham County where the Wildcats prevailed by blocking an extra point late in the game.
Senior CJ Menzie rushed for a career-high 116 yards and a score in the win. The Wildcat defense was led by defensive lineman Tre' Brown as the Gardner-Webb bound senior had 10 tackles with three for losses and a sack, while Jeremiah Jones added nine stops.
Liberty County lost on the road in Week 1 to Wayne County in a 24-21 setback.
Jaeir Roberts and sophomore Jack Jacobson shared time at quarterback and combined to throw for 138 yards and three scores.
Senior linebacker Mekhi James led the Panthers with 12 tackles.
