There is logic to it, especially for a club that often needs smart recruitment rather than headline-grabbing deals.
The most encouraging line in this report is probably the one about his “athleticism, physical presence and versatility”. Palace fans know how important those qualities are over a long Premier League season. You need defenders who can cope physically, adapt quickly and cover more than one role when injuries and fixture demands kick in.
At £15.4m, it is not a small fee, but it also does not look excessive in the current market if the club genuinely believe he can develop further. The real concern is the competition.
